Storyboard Developments - computer technoloogy

For the first slide of the presentation, i believe it would be best to show the progression from the earliest inventions of communication before and after the conflict of world war 2. showing how everything has changed due to the fact of the world being seperated for such a long time. to do this i will incorporate all my notes, pictures and research from the previous session. with all these sources i will try to construct a miniture timeline of pivotal points. understanding the principles first before or if i decide to change them.

Slide 2 can commence with a clear graph showing the progression of computers in much more detail. the graph will begin from the early 70s because that is when the world began to get much more technical and dynamic. i will use this slide to communicate with the target audience, which will be ranging from college to university students who are intrested in beginning a I.T course. i plan to use the first two slide's to commemorate the who, what, why and when. whereas the third and forth will be focused solely on refrencing and conclusion, by using a typical bibliography.

Slide 3 will contain where the development today, portraying the advances in 3D technology. The bibliography should just be a list of websites & books maybe using certain screenshots from the main websites where i gathered my information from, and images of the books author or cover.

The images used in all slides should clearly state the point i am trying to get across. It would be a bonus if the images could colour co - ordinate with the powerpoint design. This could possibly be computer generated aswell. with the use of powerpoint, i could use animations to highlight titles and particular images throughout the computer development industry e.g 1752 Franklin invents electricity  or 1969 the goverment developing the Arpanet. i could maybe include my other idea, which was the development of the mobile phone.

Prior to starting this powerpoint presentation i had a rough idea of what i wanted to portray and developments i wanted to focus on. i first though about highlighting the main moments in the mobile phone development industry, but i thought the mobile phone has gone as far as it could. theres only a little bit more room for development, whereas the home pc has changed drastically since the 1970s. The reason i chose this subject is because computers have come a very long way from the conflict of world war II to the new millenium. i was pleased because the first slide followed the storyboarding very well, i did not want to crowd the slide to much with images. So instead i bullet pointed the pivotal moments in the computers history. The colour and design i chose really highlighted the image and words including the title, which would give the audience a comfortable view.

When i came to producing the second slide i strayed away from the storyboarding a little, which was a little mistake. because not only does this slide have to much type on it, the slide has to rely on the images to make it work, and i placed the title wrong. What i should have done is maybe reference to the movie disclosure to give the presentation a outlook into how computer companies were, and what could happen in tense situations, when someone is fired from long term etc. Michael Douglas plays Tom Sanders, an executive at DigiCom, a leading computer software firm. DigiCom is about to launch a new virtual reality-based data storage system that is expected to revolutionize the industry, and Bob Garvin (Donald Sutherland), the owner of the company, is in the midst of negotiating a merger that could bring $100 million into the firm.

This would then lead onto the 3rd slide and a overview of the biggest companies producing computers, as in disclosure IBM is metioned as the biggest but this slide indicates since steve jobs created apple, the company has been on the up and up developing and updating their software every year. Closely behind them are Dell who manufacture personalised Pc's and laptops. HP on the other hand doesnt just produce computers, they do phones, printers and scanners but at a much less standard as apple computers. This slide followed the planning process quite well but it looks quite incomplete, there should be more images showing WHY apple has been ontop of the market, and the direction its going in.

The final slide which had the Bibliography was indeed simple to do. i chose these particualr websites and books because they were very insiteful, i used my comm digital skills to my advantage and stayed away from wikipedia. The books gave me the opportunity to look at other directions i could have possibly taken. overall i am pleased in the way this presentation turned out. I think i can improve on researching alot better and thinking more about the layout of my phrase's and images. if i do this it would make the audience more interactive in the subject i chose.

3D Animation Presentation - Individual

For the overall outlook of this design, i wanted to depict an element of elegance, and class. in contrast to the previous powerpoint presentation decided on going into more detail about the characteristics of 3D animation. I believed it was best to use powerpoint to emphasize all the important moments how this type of animation has developed.

  • Pre Production
in the pre production stage of this project, I carefully storyboarded each slide, noting down in sequence the process of 3D animation. i used these as a blueprint to work out how many images were needed, the colour scheme, typeface and highlights. i also wanted to portray development, which the other presentation didnt possess.

i wrote down a list of talking points in order, which i research thoroughly -

  • Some aspects of 3D animation
  • Company's
  • Stop Motion
  • Software
  • Pioneers of a movement
  • in conclusion
  • Bibliography
i figured 7 slides would be an overall amount in which  i could get my point across, each featuring images and a substantial amount of text. I accumilated alot of research for the software section of this presentation in particualar, that focuses on technicalities and motion capture.

  • Production
1. The aim of this presentation is to inform an audience that have no or little knowledge about 3D animation. so the first slides would be the most important of all slides.they will just be about the origin and background of where this type of technique came from, setting up the powerpoint about the subject i am about to go into in more detail.  i believed the first slide should not have any images, just a statement or paragraph I could draft my comments being made on.

2. the slide consisting of the characteristics develops the technique further by explaining how it is different from other aspects of art and computer graphics. i decided on making these bullet pointed because they are more guidelines, priorites and facts. this would also inform the audience about how the process was created and sets out the difference made between dimensional drawing. at this stage the computer is introduced as a main aspect of 3D animation.

In the industry of animation, there are many avenues that ambitious people have tried to go. so with the forth coming slides i considered narrowing down the main 3D animation company's that have been formed in the 21st century. By doing this the audience at this point would be able to notice and relate to the subject of the presentation in regonisable form. Because these companies are well known. Pixar was the first company to ever create a full length feature Animation called "Toy Story" . i wanted to show the importance of this feature by incorporating images of the creator and the bright flamboyant colours used on the Aniamtion.
this slide only shows previous works of pixar, where the audience can get a sense of satisfaction, by knowing and understanding the perfection of 3D animation. this is a transistion slide where i could then move onto another company called Dreamworks. Who some say was Pixars main competitor in the animation industry. At this point the audience would be able to make som sort of comparison between the two. we then get to see how Pixar's technique is taken again to a different level and is more fantasized and much more realistic in works like "Shrek" and "Kung Fu Panda".

The Developments of the mobile Phone

Martin Cooper's role in conceiving and developing the first portable cellular phone directly impacted his choice to found and lead a wireless technology and systems company founded in 1992 called ArrayComm. ArrayComm's core adaptive antenna technology increases the capacity and coverage of any cellular system, while significantly lowering costs and making speech more reliable. This technology addresses what Cooper calls "the unfulfilled promise" of cellular, which should be, but still isn't as reliable or affordable as wired telephony.
Martin Cooper shown here was the first person to ever invent a hand held mobile phone on April 3rd 1973. it could only do the basics recieve and make calls.

This is a graph showing the Developent and rise of the mobile phone since the turn of the century. As the image shows from the birth of the ericsson and Nokia phones. As with the television, over the years mobile phones were introduced to full colour and became more sleeker and compact. It was only in the years 2006 and 2008 that the mobile phone used additional gadgets and accessories e.g bluetooth, wap internet as shown below.

Most people Select a mobile phone by what the device can do e.g Multimedia messaging or Video Call. depending on the user a phone was transformed into a day to day device, where a person can access all their e mails, music and organiser.
All these images with possible enhancement from powerpoint and  further diagrams would make the audience understand the subject matter much more clearer.

This would also be the preferred subject to base a powerpoint presentation on because There is alot of ground to cover, and it was a very interesting thing to witness. Which was the revolution if technology which spread all over the world in a short space of time.

Communication Skills - Presentation Feedback

  • How well was your team organised? did you work effectively as a group
I believe our team was not prepared at all. We did not rehearse anything that we were going to present, and  this definatly showed immensly in the performance. But on the upside every group member showed up the group meeting before the presentation.
Our team work was satisfactory but fairly well in the process period, but some team members were'nt fully focused. During the presentation a team member came to anothers aid, which showed alot of support and quick thinking. The characteristics that brought our group down was there was not any leadership, co - ordination or communication, and there was a slight sense of incompetance and lack of attention aswell.

to improve on these points the team would have to communicate much better, not just in group meetings but during class. rehearsal is a very important factor to include in improvements, it helps the presentation flow seamless. Our group could also improve on the knowledge of compatibility, and show more interest not just in subjects already known but in new subjects also.

  • how well were various tasks distributed within the group?
  • did you effectively allocate tasks and engage in constructive dialogue in group meetings?
  • did all members contribute to the task?
Our group worked very well when it came to deciding on a final idea to present. most members of the group did their research extremly well, they knew very clearly what they wanted to achieve within  a powerpoint. Whereas other members didn't do as  much on the technical side of things. This was left up to the more experienced members.

During group meetings, there was not enough time allocated to gather a substantial amount of work. So the presentation had to rely on the little information gathered, I think if we would have shared findings alot better and listened to what the experienced members had to say, our presentation would not have lacked contents.

Also the one group meeting we had was left to the last minute so we couldnt distribute tasks to highlight our personal skills. There were some moments during our group meeting that i considered pointless because not all  memebrs of the group were not concentrating.

  • What research did you carry out, relating to the content of the presentation?
The group together didnt research anything, but we all did our research individually  and effectively then brought our findings together.

I personally researched the home sites of the biggest 3D animation company's, software packages and the origin of 3D animation. i also storyboarded these ideas for a powerpoint.
But because we didnt have that much time or communicate that well, these findings were left to go on a seperate indivdual powerpoint presentation.

  • Did you make effective use of visual aids? If not how could this be improved?
Our group did not use powerpoint as effectively as it could be used. Our presentation was very plain and simple with the use of basic images, words and fonts.

there were no transistions, or follow through so the presentation broke down half way through. we could have done this much better if we would have rehearsed a few times and tried to sync what we were saying with the images. if we would have done this, there would have been no need to read off the screen or from our written notes, because they would have been memorised.

this could also have been improved by the experieced members giving tutorials on powerpoint, showing the way a powerpoint could be fully expressed. There was not enough Information included, we just stuck on one idea and did not take it further.
